The Nursery

A Walled Garden was built to replace the original estate nursery in the early 1900’s. The Walled Garden was used to produce fruit and vegetables for the Bute family when they were in residence at the castle.

A new border was also created that runs along the beautiful red brick wall. The border contains roses, mixed border seasonal interest plants for pollinators and some species that were in Pettigrew plantings within the park.

The Bute Park Nursery has always been busy and stocked full of plants – here’s some Cardiff Parks taken in the 1960’s:

The nursery is still in use, producing thousands of bedding plants and supplying plants and trees throughout Cardiff’s parks and in the city centre.

Delicious, fresh salad leaves are grown and sold all year round by Cardiff Salad Garden, a non-profit social enterprise that is based within Bute Park Nurseries.

The project aims to develop horticultural skills, improve social skills and build confidence and works with asylum seekers, refugees and individuals with mental health illnesses.
